Showroom Update

If you subscribe to our twitter page (@HouckRemodeling), you know that progress has been made on our new showroom. The drywall work is done and all of the finish painting is complete. Next is our ceiling, electrical, and then it will be time to move flooring and displays in. We are hoping to have it up and open to the public by the end of November but due to our heavy work load in the coming weeks we may have to push the grand opening to Late December. Either way it will be a fun ride.

Cupola mood lighting

For those reading this not in the Centerville, Ohio area; about two months ago we had a heck of a hail storm. Enough of a storm with damage enough to bring in all the gypsy roofers (don’t get me started). Anyhow, a local orthodontist office in the heart of Centerville zippered siding, shutter, and screen damage. Their cupola also was damaged beyond repair. We were contracted to do all the repairs mentioned above and replace the cupola. After building, modifying, and prepping it (installing windows in the cupola, venting, and electric for a hanging light). We finished it this week. Below are some photos including a night shot with the light on. Please note the “Elk” weather-vane…it is Centerville.

Siding and a Cupola

This has been a fun project. The scope of the project entailed removing hIl damaged siding, shutters, gable vents, and a cupola. Now we have built houses from the ground up, done historical renovations, room additions and just about every other remodeling project you could think of, but this is our first cupola. We have most of the siding repaired, new shutter up and the gable vents ready to go in. The old cupola had to come all the down, what wasn’t damaged in the hail storm was rotted out. I now have the start of cupola base framed in and Monday will have that completed to receive the new cupola.

Summer Time Projects

We do a lot of Kitchens, tile work, and Baths remodels, but people tend to forget that Houck Remodeling also does many other remodeling projects. We do windows, doors, decks, fences, and smaller siding projects. We have built sheds to 3 car garages. We normally don’t turn down small repair projects either. Being that we are only in the second week of July there is still plenty of time to get those windows replaced, a new storm-door put on, or expand/add a deck in the back yard and enjoy those nice summer evenings.

Third Friday in downtown Centerville

This Friday, in downtown Centerville is the Heart of Centerville “After Hours” event. This one’s theme is “Glam in the City” (http://www.heartofcenterville.com/files/email_files/Glam_in_the_City_3rd_Friday.JPG). Most local businesses in the heart of Centerville will be open from 5pm to 9pm with different attractions. Ladies; you are encouraged to come dressed in “glam style” (don’t ask me what that is I’m a contractor); if i had to guess i think they are going for the “hip/glamorous” look that starlets go for.

Houck Remodeling is pleased to announce that we will be hosting Florida Tile (www.floridatile.com) and Behr (www.behr.com) painting and staining products. The showroom will be open and we will have some light snacks while they last.

A new front door

Entry doors take a lot of abuse, from people and the weather. This door took a lot of abuse form the weather. there was substantial rot (as the photos above show). The majority of the damage was around the brick-molding and near the bottom of the door jambs. Those are the most common areas for rot to occur since there are the typical areas of water intake. Normally the caulk or paint on the brick molding will fail and allow water to get in. Once in it seeps into joints and cracks that are unprotected and the rot beings. The bottom of the jambs are another easy target since this is where the water that doesn’t seep into a crack will run to. It is also the area that receives all the “splash” from the storms and where water pools. Once the paint starts to wear or a crack appears you need to stay on top of keep it sealed or it will rot. The problem is that by the time you notice a crack or worn paint it may already be rotting.

The new door was a perfect fit. Even the interior door casing lined right back up (so there was no drywall repair or painting of the walls needed). The homeowner wanted to add a new storm door. Storm doors are always a nice idea, and today there are so many options to choose from you are sure to find one that complements the home. One of the nice additions to many doors today is a “rot-proof” bottom jamb. The door manufacture will use a composite material for the bottom 6 or so inches of the jamb instead of regular wood to keep the jambs form doing what the above pictures show. Below are a couple shots of the new door installed. It looks really nice and will give the homeowner many years of use.

Room Conversion totally finished

The room conversion at St. Leonard’s is totally finished at this point. It has been a longer than normal process but the end product is still just as good. In a normal circumstance we would have been finished a lot sooner. However with this remodeling project we were working with other contractors on the job and some of St. Leonard’s staff doing some of the work as well. Any time you add more than one contractor to the mix you can have delays. Schedule have to match up or other contractors get pushed back and inevitably it slows the whole process down. The upside in this particular case is that the unit was empty so no one was inconvenienced while the work occurred.

To briefly recap we installed a new kitchen, cut a hole in the wall to allow for a pass through door. We also tore out the existing kitchen and small closet in the adjoining room to add a new laundry room and a walk in closet.

St. Leonards Room Conversion Update

Below are some shots of the “almost” finished project. Our part is done, the finish painting and new flooring is going to be done by others. The first is a shot of the new walls we built to house the laundry room and walk in closet. The second and third shots are of the laundry room and walk in closet. The last photo is of the pass through door way. The whole in the wall next to the laundry room door is for a air “pass-through” vent which will be installed later.
